Mandatory Boat Inspections at Cachuma Lake
February 2008
Please come with a dry bilge, dry wet well, and
hull free of buildup.
Due to the high threat of quagga and zebra
mussels, invasive aquatic species, all private
vessels launching at Cachuma Lake will be
inspected and all boaters will be surveyed by
County Park Staff.
-
All privately-owned boats will
be inspected
-
Boats must have a dry bilge, dry
wet well, and clean undersides
-
Every effort will be made to
speed inspection time
-
A copy of the survey will be
kept on file for each boater
-
Frequent boaters to Cachuma will
be given an abbreviated
interview
-
Live bait is limited to night
crawlers

What is the Threat?
Quagga and Zebra
Mussels are harmful introduced freshwater
mussels from Eastern Europe that clog waterways,
undermine healthy lake ecosystems, ruin boat
engine cooling systems, and cost water resource
agencies billions every year. Introduction into
a lake can be from recreational boats by adult
mussels growing on boats and by microscopic
larvae living in wet storage on boats. The
mussels have reached the Colorado River system,
numerous Southern California lakes, and San
Justo Reservoir in Hollister. To prevent further
spread and introduction into Cachuma Lake and
other lakes, the Santa Barbara County Parks
Department is taking these steps to avoid
infection.
Boaters Hold the Key to Preventing the Spread of
Quaggas!
-
If
possible, avoid lakes infected with
the quagga mussel. Currently,
contamination is limited to Lakes in
San Diego County and the Colorado
River system.
-
Up-to-date info is at
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/invasives/quaggamussel/
-
Thoroughly wash boat hulls, bait
wells, & buckets of all plant and
animal detritus.
-
If
infected with adult mussels, boats
must be dry for 30 days.
-
If
boats have been in contaminated
lakes, wells must be dry for 7
days before entering Cachuma.
-
Drain
all bait tanks & remove all hull
plugs, & leave them out when leaving
Cachuma. Inspect all exposed vessel
surfaces – Quagga Mussels feel like
sandpaper to the touch.
-
Drain
& dry vessel’s lower outboard unit.
-
Clean
and dry any live-wells.
-
Dispose of unused bait in trash
cans.
-
Transporting quagga mussels,
knowingly or unknowingly, violates
California AB 1683, signed into law
in October 2007.
